Even in the mid 70's, when I
started my schooling, Kottiyoor was an under developed village. My school - Govt. U P School Thalakkani was a long shed
thatched with coconut leaves. The main block - where the school office and class rooms up to 4th standard was going on -was
somewhat a good building. Even now after all these years I feel the nostalgic smell of Upma which
was served at lunch time. There were no cooks in the school to prepare the food. Boys from upper classes were assigned to
do the job and they were happy with it. Upma was made of broken wheat which availed through an American helping programme. Most
of the students in the school had their houses uphill. On the way to the school they used to take banana leaves or Vattayilas
with them to get the upma seved. The boys who mede upma had special prevelage to keep a bucketful of the food for themselves.
Ordinary students had to satisfy with a small serving while those one near and dear to the 'cooks' got as much as they
want. The cooks were the heroes in the school, they seldom attend the class, like free birds they flew around the compound.
